Airtightness Testing for IP-Rated Consumer Electronics and Sealed Assemblies

Consumer electronics airtightness testing combines high production volume with tight space constraints. Cameras, touchscreens, wearables, and locator modules require validated IP ratings before shipment — tested individually, quickly, and without damaging cosmetic surfaces. Figurtech LY-based test stations are deployed at consumer electronics production facilities across southern China.

Case: 4K Security Camera — Dual-Channel Airtightness Station

Instrument: LY Series Direct Pressure Airtightness Tester
Fixture: Dual-channel pneumatic clamping fixture, custom aluminum tooling

Challenge

4K security camera modules require IP67 or IP68 airtightness validation as a 100% production test. The fixture must hold the camera without damaging the lens or cosmetic housing surfaces while achieving reliable sealing for the test cycle.

Solution

The LY Series drives a dual-channel pneumatic clamping fixture. The operator places the camera module into the nest and initiates the test — pneumatic clamps close and seal automatically. The touchscreen displays OK or NG within the test cycle. The aluminum tooling contacts only non-cosmetic surfaces. Test data is logged per serial number for traceability.

Result

  • 100% production coverage at consumer electronics line throughput
  • OK/NG decision displayed immediately on touchscreen after each cycle
  • Non-cosmetic contact tooling design eliminates surface damage reject risk

Case: Touchscreen Assembly — Full and Semi-Finished Testing

Instrument: LY Series
Fixture: Custom clamshell fixture, large-format touchscreen products

Challenge

Large-format touchscreen assemblies must be tested at both the semi-finished (pre-glass bonding) and finished stages. Two different fixture geometries are required. The test pressure specification differs between stages.

Solution

The LY Series supports multiple stored test programs. The semi-finished station and finished-product station each use their own program in the same instrument. Operators at both stages use the same instrument interface — no retraining required.

Result

  • Consistent test results across semi-finished and finished assembly stages
  • Dual-stage coverage reduces defect escape risk at final inspection
  • Single instrument platform across two test points reduces total equipment cost

Case: Positioning Sensor (Locator) — Production Line Deployment

Instrument: LY Series
Deployment: Standalone station integrated beside production conveyor

Challenge

Locator modules are produced in high volume and must pass airtightness validation before board coating. The test station must integrate beside a conveyor line and support rapid one-handed part loading.

Solution

The LY Series standalone station is placed beside the production conveyor. The operator places the locator module into a single-channel quick-seal fixture, initiates the test, and receives an OK/NG result within the cycle time. NG parts are redirected before coating.

Result

  • 100% in-line airtightness coverage before board coating
  • Rapid single-hand part loading with quick-seal connector
  • Station footprint (320 × 284 × 300 mm) fits within available line space
